| ABOUT VILLA SENJA BALI |
Bordered by terraced rice fields reminiscent of amphitheatres, and complete with a 17 x 6 metre swimming pool, the five-bedroom villa was designed entirely by its French owners. It was not built for business purposes; instead it is the realisation of a dream, a genuine home and a ‘living’ house, created to accommodate and fulfil the needs of a Western family who spend much of their time in Bali, but are happy for guests to stay in the villa on a rental basis whenever they are away. The style is a romantic fusion of Colonial, Javanese, French and Chinese inspiration, harmonised with antique furnishings, artwork and treasures that have been gradually collected over the years. The structure of Villa Senja is rich in history and features an abundance of old teak wood. The 54-square-metre salon is built around an antique Javanese ‘joglo’ house and boasts a breezy verandah extending into the tropical Balinese garden. Even the outside of the villa follows the lines of a joglo with its distinctive funnel-shaped, shingle clad roof.
The owners’ private collection of artwork from around the world includes old pictures from India, framed photos of Vietnam and paintings from Hoi Anh, the Vietnamese painting city. Indonesian artefacts include sculptures and statues from the islands of Bali, Timor and Flores. Broadband Internet access is provided for the use of the guests
The locality of Villa Senja is dotted with some of the most impressive private residences on the island, and the sweeping view is enhanced on clear days by the magical sight of the Bali’s central mountain range, incorporating Mt Batukaru, Mt Sengayang and Mt Pohen. Despite the close proximity to Seminyak, the traditions of rural Bali still prevail; cows are herded through the fields and the sound of ritual music is carried on the breeze. The sweeping beach at Seminyak is renowned for its world-class surf breaks, panoramic coastline views and legendary sunsets. Umalas Riding Stables is just one kilometre from Villa Senja, and the area is also the location of the The Canggu Club, Bali’s first and only international private members’ club; offering sports, social and leisure facilities, including a state-of-the art gym, a 25-metre swimming pool and a tennis & squash centre. Nirwana Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman, is a twenty-minute car journey. Convenient for all of the main shopping malls and tourist attractions, Villa Senja is twenty-five minutes’ drive from Bali’s International Airport. |

Guest Bungalow |
Villa Senja’s self-contained colonial-style guest bungalow is located close to the main building and houses an air-conditioned bedroom, dressing room and garden bathroom. It is encompassed by a huge wrap-around terrace furnished with antique daybeds, an ornately carved Javanese marriage bed, lazy chairs and a hammock. A dressing room, complete with coloured glass windows, is situated between the bedroom and the en-suite bathroom, and there is a separate toilet. The garden bathroom boasts a freestanding tub, Palimanan stone walls, and Arabic fretwork stone windows. A shower cubicle with a lancet arched wooden surround completes the Moroccan theme.

Garden & Pool Area |
The lovely terraced garden was designed by the owners, and flows with the energy of nearly every species of tree that grows in the lowlands of Bali, including kapok, fig, breadfruit, flamboyant, orchid trees, fruit trees, palms, and many other colourful flowering shrubs. An old frangipani tree, its double trunks entwined, is reminiscent of a sculpture. The 17 x 6 metre pool is 2.5 metres in depth and lined with green Javanese stone. It is characterised by an infinity edge and is bordered by antique wood; set against a backdrop of padi fields, its shape following the curve of the rice terraces. The pool area is furnished with sunloungers, umbrellas and a hammock. At the bottom of the garden is an authentic wooden Javanese house, which was disassembled before being transported to Bali and rebuilt. Complete with toilet and washroom, it can be used as a small fitness centre or massage room and is also another tranquil spot for chilling out.

Bedrooms
Four of the bedrooms at Villa Senja are located within the two-storey building, which is connected to the joglo building. Each spacious air-conditioned bedroom possesses its own distinct ambience created by independent furnishing styles, tinted cement walls, en-suite bathrooms, and broad balconies or colonial-style terraces overlooking the garden and pool. Each is characterised by antiques, timber floorboards, wooden shutters and casement windows, together with high ceilings, open beams, and an abundance of light. Each is furnished with a queen-size or king-size bed, Asian antiques, original artwork, a safe deposit box, and CD player. Two of the bedrooms feature a wide cushioned seat built into a Moghul-inspired recess. All bedrooms are equipped with TVs and DVD players, four of them with cable TV. |

Bathrooms
Each bathroom is luxurious, exceptional and unique. There are two sunny garden bathrooms, in keeping with the romantic Bali style, each boasting an oversized bathtub and shower cubicle within an open-air courtyard planted with lush tropical foliage and surrounded by high walls for privacy. The three indoor bathrooms are also remarkable, one incorporates an antique joglo (Javanese house), which – together with the intricately carved window panels of an ancient Javanese mosque – was transported from the small town of Kudus, famous for its elaborate woodwork. In the centre of the bathroom, under a pitched wooden ceiling, is a sunken octagonal bathtub, complete with rainshower. The other bathrooms, with their antique timber floorboards, are dominated by features such as carved wall panels, coloured glass windows, or a 1930s-style freestanding tub and pedestal washbasin. |
| |
Kitchen
The large, fully equipped kitchen is reminiscent of a French Provençal farmhouse kitchen with thick chunky walls, a terracotta tiled floor, antique doorframes and a farmhouse-style table. It is here that the staff will prepare delicious Western and Indonesian meals in accordance with your personal requirements. Outside is a small ‘back kitchen’ set within its own courtyard, and enclosed by a half wall with a short flight of steps. On the west side of the kitchen, glass doors open onto a garden terrace sheltered by a living pergola dripping with colourful flowers. |
